What is the appeal of fantasy?
Fantastic literature (including fantasy and science fiction) is characterized by a break from reality, by settings and characters that would be impossible in the real world. In their fantasy worlds, authors explore deep and meaningful questions about life and human nature. Listen to this short video clip to hear more about how author Grace Lin entered the world of fantasy writing:
Notable Elements of Fantasy
Of course, the setting is one of the most notable elements of a fantasy or science fiction book. Although books in this genre don't need a plausible plot, what happens in the story needs to follow the fantasy world's logic. Consistency is key! Listen in on author Kate Messner as she describes how to build a fictional world:
Fantasy and science fiction stories also provide an interesting perspective from which to explore some common literary themes, for example:
The struggle between good and evil
What it means to be human
Consequences of pride
Impact of scientific discoveries
learning about your strengths and weaknesses
Consider how fantasy allowed Kate DiCamillo to explore deep, meaningful themes in her award-winning novel The Tale of Despereaux; here is her Newbery Award acceptance speech from 2004.
Evaluating Fantasy and Science Fiction

An excellent, fantastic tale should meet all the qualifications for an excellent fictional narrative, and some more specific to the genre. As you read your selected fantasy or science fiction text for the week, consider these questions:
Is the fantastic element or fantasy world detailed and believable within the context of the story?
Are the story events imaginative but still logically consistent within the story world?
Are the characters multidimensional with consistent and logical behavior?
Is the writing rich and the structure clear?
Are the themes meaningful, causing the reader to think about life?
